The first bridge at this crossing was a swing bridge. The original Baltimore and Ohio Railroad bridge was a wing-type, swing bridge. Because its weight limit was limited to ten-ton trucks, it hindered the growth of Whiskey Island. It was replaced by a Scherzer Rolling Lift bridge in 1907. | Background Information: |
The second bridge at this crossing is a Scherzer Rolling Lift bridge. This new bridge was designed by the railroad under the direction of J.E. Greiner, who was Chief Engineer. The Scherzer Rolling Lift Company designed the structure, the King Bridge Company fabricated the steel work, and the Pittsburgh Construction Company built the bridge. This bridge has a span of 230 feet and when it was built in 1907, it was the longest single-leaf Scherzer ever built. Source: Bridges of Metropolitan Cleveland |
