At beginning of each month create a list of all University Library bibliographic records that contain an 856 field. (MB)


1. Create list in III

2. Run linkbot software against the attached file to identify bad links. (VM)
3. Search Yahoo! (http://www.yahoo.com) or other search engine to find correct URL for bad links. If find correct URL, edit the appropriate file and add new URL note to beginning of appropriate line "!--new url". (VM)
4. If cannot find correct URL for resource, add bad link note, 8 digit date and suppression code "!--bad url"(VM)
5. Check file for new and bad URLs and edit as appropriate. (MB)

Insert diskette in disk drive. Open Notepad. Click on File. Click on Open. Look in: 3 1/2 Floppy (A:). Double-click on catalog. Files of type: All Files (*.*). Double-click on file to open. Place cursor at top of page. Click on Search. Click on Find. Find What: new url. Click on Find Next. If search finds "!--new URL", open Scholar.

Bring up the appropriate bibliographic record. Replace URL in 538, 856 |u and occasionally the 590 and 530 field with the correct URL. Be careful that you only replace what resides in the |u of the 856 field. If you think you may have deleted other information, exit out of record without saving and start over. Save changes to bibliographic record.

Open Notepad. Delete "" at the end of line. Be very careful not to delete anything more or less than that. Click on Search. Click on Find Next. If search finds "!--new URL", repeat.

6. For bad URL's, follow procedures to delete from catalog and html file if link fails on two consecutive link accuracy checks. Return diskette to JKC. (MB)
